How to declutter and organize your closet

Okay, we have to be honest here. Who doesn’t have a million clothes on their closet that hasn’t been worn in years? Guilty!
I try to declutter my closet at least once a year. I already done it this year and let’s just say it wasn’t pretty. It took me days to go through everything and in the end, there was two giant bags full of clothes I don’t wear anymore. Yeah, I know. Please don’t judge me.
For those of you who don’t know how to start decluttering, I’m here to help.
1 – Start by the small things
If you have drawers, start there. One drawer at a time. Take everything out and go through it. See what you like and don’t like, what fits and what doesn’t. If there’s anything you haven’t worn in a year, that has to go too.
After going through the clothes, put the ones you’re keeping back in the drawer and the others in a back to throw out or donate. I normally give mine to my little cousin. Yes, we’re a “hand me downs” kind of family.
2 – The hangers
After going through all the drawers, it’s time to open the closet and start taking the hanged clothes. If you have too many hangers, like me, I suggest you take only a few at a time.
Do the same as you did with the drawers. Go through it and divide it into stay and go.
3 – The underwear
I know this may sound weird, but I know you have a bunch of old underwear that is not usable anymore and you’re just haven’t had the courage to throw it out. So, go through that too and decide what goes and what stays.
Trust me, you’ll feel like a weight has been lifted and your drawer will thank you.
4 – Laundry
After deciding what you’re keeping, go back and see if there’s any piece that needs to be washed or ironed. Sometimes if they have been in the closet or drawer for a while, they get a stuffy smell and that sucks.
So, wash what needs to be washed and iron what needs to be ironed so it’s ready to wear whenever you want it.
5 – Dividing into types of clothing
I like to separate everything. In my closet the shirts are not mixed with the dresses. I have coats, shirts, tops, dresses, all separated into sections it’s easier to find what you’re looking for that way.
I also do that with the drawers. I have one for long sleeves, another for short sleeves or summer tops and another for pants.
6 – Separate by season
Another great way to find what you want easily is to have it separate by season. Summer clothes on one side and winter clothes on the other. Simple but effective.
7 – The folding
How many of you are sick of going to take that one shirt on the bottom of the drawer and all the other shirts on top get messy? Yeah, I did too until I found a new way to fold and put away the clothes. I had to reorganize my drawers every week and since I started doing this, I don’t have to do it anymore.
I found this way on Pinterest and it’s a life (and space) saver.
